Celebrations
Coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg and first appearing in his 1990 book, "The Great Good Place," a celebration of the places where people can regularly go to take it easy and commune with friends and family. Celebrations are times when people come together to give recognition that something good has happened.
When communities come together and take intentional action through festivals, celebrations, programs and projects and then connect these efforts in a celebratory manner, participants often sense a common goal, sense of place and community and growth towards resiliency.
A key strategy for advancing Partnerships for Community Resiliency is to come together to host community celebrations throughout the year. In this way, the community can celebrate its culture, realize its social relevance and build relationships between its stakeholders.
