Inspiring Civic Responsibility through Service Learning!

Service Learning is a top priority for ERCEGI.  We specialize in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating Service Learning that engages youth ages 14-18 and adults age 19 and up.  We involve the students from start to finish in the process so that they can play an active role in researching and designing what their project will encompass.  Integrating strategies between high school students and students of higher education, we connect projects to local area needs and cultivate interagency collaborations.

Service Learning Defined

“Service learning [is] any carefully monitored service experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she is learning throughout the experience. Service learning programs emphasize the accomplishment of tasks that address community issues and include features which foster participant’s learning about larger social issues and an understanding of the reciprocal learning and service which can occur between students and community members.” (http://www.nsee.org/).

Service-learning is a method of teaching which connects learning to the community in order to provide services to others. The primary emphasis is on enriching the learning that happens as students apply their knowledge to a community context. (Aberdeen Service Learning Project, Northern State University).

Best Practices Service Learning

Service-learning is initially a difficult concept for people to understand. That is because people immediately think of volunteerism. People need to understand the distinction between community service and service-learning. Service-learning is a method of teaching which connects classroom content to the community in a way that is helpful to others. The primary emphasis is on enriching the learning that happens as students apply their knowledge to a community context. By contrast, the primary purpose of youth community service is to provide service to the community and to foster citizenship and an ethic of service.

Service Learning Curriculum Quick Guide

High quality service-learning can contribute to student academic achievement and civic and social development. However, for these outcomes to occur, service-learning projects must be organized to maximize the meaningfulness of both service and learning.

A GUIDEBOOK FOR ENGAGING AMERICA’S STUDENTS IN A LIFELONG HABIT OF SERVICE

Young people’s service can be an asset to their neighborhoods. Service to others can also develop important habits and skills. This document has been created to help adults—teachers, parents, after-school providers, and members of community-based organizations—to find and create opportunities for young people to answer the Call to Service.
